Dragon Momoko (DM) dropped this bombshell shortly after the shipping of their fabulous MG 1/100 Testament Gundam, surprising a fair bit of the community. For the uninitiated, the Arming Tree & Progressive Weapons package exists as a Bandai Chogokin set released some years back and costs a bomb (as with most Chogokin-branded products). It is a very interesting concept, even for non-followers of the Evangelion franchise, which is why you are now reading this Analysis.
Third party model kit manufacturer Anubis has been releasing some pretty cool stuff over the past few months, from the titular multi-function Anubis Base to a Heavy Combat Weapon Set that is able to meld mechanically with the Gunpla from almost any Gundam series. Their latest product throws back to simpler times, but with a twist.

As the latest rendition (model kit development wise) of the Denial Gundam, the Gundam Schwarzritter boasts a dark, brooding black colour scheme, complemented by powerful accents of gold. From the no-frills, pugilistic design of the Denial, the Schwarzritter is equipped with a massive backpack that can turn into equally massive swords, giving it undeniable power as required by the Masked Second G.

Third party model kit manufacturer Dragon Momoko (DM) has been doing some great work with their MG 1/100 Strike series of model kits, pushing out a good number of different units very quickly. The Divine Testament Gundam is the latest in DM's MG line, incorporating all of its lessons learned and technology developed over the past three years.
So is the Testament a testament of what the company can do?

The Barzam is in itself an oxymoron: it is a Federation mobile suit but with the signature monoeye-sensor of Zeon units and it looks nothing like the RX-178 Gundam Mk-II that it was based off, other than the Titans colour scheme. The various design features and characteristics give the Barzam a bestial, oddly appealing look, being the love-child of Federation and Zeon engineering.

[Custom] Bandai HGIBO 1/144 V08-1228 Grimgerde Vanguard [Anti Mobile Armor Combat Equipment] (Customised Build)
The Grimgerde came out of nowhere to kick ass in the first season of the Iron Blooded Orphans anime, but sadly relinquished its place on the show to become the Helmwige Reincar, which was eventually wrecked. Nevertheless, the Grimgerde made such a showy impact that the customised Grimgerdes have not stopped coming.

The Draken III is arguably a masterpiece of variable fighter (VF) design, shifting from a sleek delta-shaped fighter mode to a walking tank Gerwalk and finally to the slender, Anubis-esque Battroid form. As compared to the protagonist Siegfried, the dark and brooding Draken III captured my attention (and money).

Every now and then, I get a wild but very doable idea for a Gunpla custom, and this time, it is a GM Ground Type retrofitted for urban combat. Inspired by the real-world TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit) that the US Army used for the venerable M1 Abrams in the Middle East, the MUSK Equipped GM Ground Type serves the same purpose: as the spearhead in a push for urban centers.

[Gallery] Bandai HGIBO 1/144 ASW-G-01 Gundam Bael (Calamity War Rollout Ver. - Agnika Kaieru Use) with Ulfbert Claymore
As certain engagements required heavier weaponry than a pair of swords, Agnika Kaieru would sometimes lift the massive Ulfbert Claymore from its ceremonial docking at Vingolf, Gjallarhorn's headquarters on Earth, and use the weapon to bring down contingents of Mobile Armors and Mobile Workers by himself.
Basically the closest IBO-universe analog of the Titans (in the eyes of the commoner at least), the Gjallarhorn Outer Earth Regulatory Fleet relied on its overwhelming military superiority to quell dissent and maintain law and order. With a huge stable of Halfbeak-class warships and their assigned squadrons of Graze mobile suits, the OERT reserved a trump card for more dire engagements.
A Gundam Frame.

Gundam Kimaris was a pretty swell Gundam Frame of its own, with its distinctive knightly visage, purple-themed colour scheme and preference for large, powerful lances. The Kimaris Vidar pulls out all the stops to create one of the best looking Gundam Frames in the series, with an ornate mohawk cresting its head, no less.

At the end of the final battle of the McGillis Fareed Incident, a modified Reginlaze Julia raised the Barbatos' severed head in victory, signalling the cessation of hostilities and the beginning of a rocky road to an uneasy peace. The final frame of the Reginlaze Julia is pretty significant as it embodies a legend retold countless times throughout the annals of history: the Devil can only be slain by Man, although in Julieta's case, this came at a very, very high cost.

The Formula Project Gundam F91 can be considered one of the most enduring masterpieces that stemmed from a Gundam series. It boasted a sleek, unique design that is complemented by a rich story that gave birth to another longstanding Gundam classic (Crossbone), securing the F91's place in the annals of Gundam history. Therefore, it comes to no surprise that a Metal Build version of the venerable mobile suit would prove immensely popular.
And it is.

The Bael was teased since season one, and even then it only showed up when the second season was past the mid-range marker. As the deus ex machina of the series of events now termed as the McGillis Fareed Incident, Bael was meant to be a trump card, meant to be the one thing that will allow McGillis full control of Gjallarhorn.
Funny how that turned out.

The Graze is an immensely versatile frame, having spawned so many variants over the short run of the IBO series. The Ground Type variant was just made available in the 1/144 format with the release of the IBO MS Option Set 9 which contained the flat ground-type feet, and this is great news for 1/144 collectors (me).
Galan Mossa's Geirail managed to kick some ass during the short period of time it was on-screen, but it was the Geirail Scharfrichters in the background that proved intriguing. With their saucer-heads, Zaku-style shoulder shields and khaki paint scheme, the Scharfrichters drew more attention than their green-blue leader, and having a name like Scharfrichter (German for Executioner) doesn't reduce its badassery.

In the previous post, I covered a straight build of the HGIBO 1/144 Gundam Barbatos Lupus Rex, a pretty decent update to the Barbatos frame. However, the proportions are a little off, particularly in the oversized arms. Something was also missing from the Lupus Rex, something that differentiated it from being a beast-like demon from the Duke of Hell title the Barbatos is named after. After some research and fooling around with parts, I found that something.

I decided to snap up one of my Lupus Rexes to test the articulation and some modification ideas, having acquired a second one in order to appropriate the tail-blade. I didn't expect much from the 8th (or it is 9th) iteration of the Gundam Barbatos, especially with the more beastial look, but snapping this up showed me that IBO kits still have lots to offer, even in the HG 1/144 format.
The Hyaku-Shiki is a timeless kit, with a classic design that transcends time, series and model kit range. The latest iteration of the Hyaku-Shiki - coincidentally also Bandai's 200th HGUC model kit - updates the venerable golden mobile suit with modern Gunpla technology, features, gimmicks and ease of assembly.

By now, everyone knows that Vidar is indeed Gaelio Bauduin, something that was actually really apparent when Vidar appeared in the opening. We know his intense hatred for McGillis, we know his motivations for said intense hatred. What we do not know is what happened during the time skip between the Battle of Edmonton and the current IBO timeline. We do know that Rustal Ellion rescued a disfigured Gaelio and recovered the crippled Gundam Kimaris before converting the machine into the Alaya-Type E enabled monster known as Gundam Vidar (and now Gundam Kimaris Vidar), but what did Gaelio/Vidar do to earn his keep in Rustal's employ?
Of all the season two mobile suits in the Iron Blooded Orphans series, the Helmwige Reincar made the biggest impact. Granted, although it was nothing more than a modified, beefed up Grimgerde that fulfilled the role of a glorified sword holder for the Barbatos Lupus, the Helmwige is still one of the best, refreshing designs that came out from the series.

Third party model kits offer insight into the "what could have been" and "what if" of Gunpla development, often with far lower price tags that won't discourage builders from picking them up. DevilArts teased their MG 1/100 Providence Gundam some time back, but then Bandai suddenly dropped a bombshell with the announcement of their own MG 1/100 Providence Gundam, with a full coloured build displayed at one of the year-end Gunpla Expos in Japan. Naturally, interest for the DevilArts version of the Providence waned, but it still remained on the radar for a while as the Bandai version will only be released in March 2017.

[Kit Insight] Bandai HGIBO 1/144 Hekija (Limited Production Test Unit for Lafter Frankland) (Painted Build)
Lafter Frankland is my favourite female character from the Iron Blooded Orphans series, with beautiful curves, remarkable features and actual character development and advancement. It also helps that she's constantly inside new machines, machines that look alien, exotic and desirable all at the same time.
The Hekija is the perfect example.
The Hashmal caused quite a stir when it made its appearance on the anime series, inciting hatred and scorn amongst many viewers. Said viewers also cheered when the Barbatos Lupus scored a Pyrrhic victory against it with Mikazuki's aggressive-suicidal tendencies, knowing that the parts from the vanquished Mobile Armor will be used to upgrade the Barbatos (again).
